North Central Florida Regional Planning Council Unpublished Material NFRPC_cemeteries vector digital data withheld NFRPC_cemeteries This layer contains burial grounds in the project area, mapped as polygon features. Both active and inactive sites are included, but not sites that would be considered pre-European or part of the archaeological record. Source data includes paper and hardcopy maps, state records (Florida Master Sites File and Division of Historical Resources), historical and genealogical societies, and other likely sources. Delineation of currently un-recorded sites is considered beyond the scope of this project, unless they are found in the course of study. This GIS layer was produced by the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council (NCFRPC) under contract with FDOT District 2 in early 2005. This is one of many layers that fall into the general category of "sociocultural" GIS data. Specifications and oversight were provided by FDOT and by the Geoplan Center at the University of Florida. The North Central Florida Regional Planning Council (NCFRPC) is working with the Florida Department of Transportation, District 2 to create regional maps of "sociocultural" features, including hospitals, parks, cemeteries, historical structures, and others. The maps will provide the FDOT with improved spatial information required for planning roadway projects. Data development is a component of the Efficient Transporation Decision Making Process (ETDM). The primary objectives of the ETDM initiative include: Effective/timely decision making without compromising environmental quality. Integrating review and permitting process. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500 Personal GeoDatabase Feature Class Some of the establishment dates and addresses for the cemeteries were unable to be acquired. Some cemteries may also be named differently or have alternate names. Any alternate names that were found are listed in the "Alternate" attribute field. The methods used in creating this layer were very consistent. The shapefile had one author and all listed sources were consulted to verify locations of features. This included field visits to many of the sites in question. Many cemeteries from the past have not been located due to lost records, lack of maintenance, lost grave markers, or a combination thereof. Of the sources that were consulted, the majority of the listed cemeteries has been demarcated. There are still several small family burials that have been lost in time, as well as possible larger ones. Some cemeteries that were once thought lost are located in this layer. The existing data from Geoplan and the FDOS included about 40 cemeteries for Alachua County. The SCE map, using additional local sources, contains over 108 sites. Gilchrist County showed a bigger improvement. This layer can benefit significantly from the SCE mapping effort. Cemeteries were a major emphasis for several reasons: they appear to be important for FDOT planning purposes; there is a great deal of information available for some counties, such as Alachua; existing maps do not reflect the available information. Methods to locate cemeteries are very different from most other layers - the standard data sources, such as parcel data and the yellow pages, are not generally helpful. Aerial photos and a variety of local sources tend to be very useful. Most counties have individual experts or historical societies that can provide critical information. Only a small portion of all burial areas have been located, and the smaller, private cemeteries may never be well-documented. But most of the larger cemeteries associated with churches and towns or otherwise recorded can be mapped. Alachua County Environmental Protection Department ACEPD GPS points from field visits. Some are best guest and half of the listed cemeteries did not show up on the map. Those that did show up were useful in creating the map and were able to be verified using other sources, including some field visits. Florida Master Sites File, Dept. of State 2002 FMSF These polygons were created using surveys to locate cemeteries. Many of these points coincided with those from the geocoded layer but the list was not complete. Most were helpful in delineating cemetery boundaries. University of Florida Geoplan 2003 GEO Points geocoded using State Historical Preservation Office and Yellow Pages information. Many locations were precise. List was not all-inclusive. These polygons coincide with the polygons from the Florida Master Sites File. University of Florida Geoplan 2003 PAR_C Cemetery parcel data derived from Department of Revenue. Helpful for certain field visits. Many cemteries do not show up as a cemetery parcel. Some parcels are hard to locate or forgotten cemeteries. Works Progress Administration 1940 WPA This was a survey conducted by the administration in which a list of cemeteries was compiled with possible veteran burials. Directions are outdated but give general idea to locate historical cemeteries. All cemeteries on this list but a few were located in conjunction with other sources. Genealogical Society of Alachua County ACGS The was a cemetery index compiled by society members listing the locaitons of cemeteries. Useful to compare with the WPA list for current names and roads. Some of the names have changed over time but almost all on this list have been located. Alachua County Clerk of Courts 2004 CLERK These GPS points were acquired by Jim Powell from the Alachua Clerk of Courts during field visits and located the exact location of a few known or missing cemeteries. This is only supplemental to other sources. United States Geological Survey Varies Topo Topographic map. Useful for finding cemeteries not shown on other layers and for verifying exact location. University of Florida Geoplan 2003 PAR_C Religion parcel data derived from Department of Revenue. This data was useful in comparing the location of another source's point in relation to the actual parcel location. North Central Florida Regional Planning Council Inter 2005 GPS These points were marked using a GPS unit while the NCFRPC intern, Alli Jones, was on location at the actual cemetery. Layer was created by using the geocoded point layer, buffering to 100m, and creating a polygon shapefile to be used for editing. New features were added when necessary to make the complete shapefile as it now exists. Added fields: ACCESS, SOURCES, ALTERNATE, RESOLVE, CONFIDENCE, and others required by SCE specifications. Deleted unnecessary fields. ACCESS tells the user how accessible the site is. SOURCES indicate the main sources helpful in verifying the cemetery location. ALTERNATE indicates other names used for the site. RESOLVE was used to differentiate polygons that were verified and finished. 0 means the site is incomplete, not located, or not verifiable. 1 means site is complete. CONFIDENCE is the author's level of confidence that the cemetery is correctly located on the map or in existence.
